Forestry research has always been part of the general forest management activities since the establishement of the Forestry, Botanic and Scientific Department in 1898. In 1954 the Forestry Research Center was esatblished in Nakawa. Forestry research was under the control of the Commissioner for Forestry until 1992 when it was transferred to the National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO). NARO was mandated to undertake, promote and coordinate research in all aspects of crops, fisheries,forestry and livestock.

NaFORRI's mode of operation is through partnership and collaboration with national,regional and international institutions including the whole NARS, all NARO institutes, universities, the International Agricultural Research Centers, the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), International Centre for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF) and all environment and natural resources institutions. | | |
