NaFORRI R4Ds Focus Areas:
 

1. Farm Forestry:
Overall objective:
To develop and disseminate appropriate technologies that intergrate trees on-farm to optimise crop yields, livestock production and conservation of the natural resource base.
Outputs:
Needs and potential trees/shrub species for intergration in farming systems identified.
Trees /shrub species for different farming systems evaluated.
Appropriate trees/shrubs management techniques developed.
Appropriate farm forestry technologies packeged and disseminated.
Adoption and impact of agroforestry technologies assessed.

2. Natural Forests:
Overall objective:
To develop and disseminate appropriate technologies for the conservation and use of biological diversity of forests and tree resources on a sustainable basis.
Outputs:
Natural forests and woodland ecosystems understood.
Communities and national development needs for natural forests resources determined.
Methods and practices for sustainable management of natural forests developed.
Appropriate forest management technologies packaged and disseminated.
Adoption and impact of sustainable forest management technologies assessed.
Impact of forest management and utilisation technologies on the ecosystems assessed.

3. Plantation Forests:
Overall objective:
To develop and disseminate technologies to enhance establishement and management of forest plantations for increased productivity.
Outputs:
Communities and national development needs for plantation forest resources understood.
Suitable trees species for plantation development identified.
Appropriate plantation forest management techniques developed.
Suitable propagation techniques for plantation tree species developed.
Adoption and impact of sustainable plantation forest management technologies assessed.

4. Forest Products and Services:
Overall objective:
To develop and disseminate appropriate technologies that enhance efficient harvesting, processing and utilization of wood and non-wood forests and tree products.
Outputs:
Efficient methods for harvesting wood and non wood forest products developed
Efficient methods for processing wood and non wood forests products developed.
Efficient methods for wood utilisation and non wood forests products developed.
Appropriate wood and non wood harvesting, processing and utilisation technologies packaged and disseminated.

5. Integrated Pests, Diseases and Fire Management:
Overall objective:
To develop and disseminate technologies for integrated pest and disease management and protection of trees and plantation from fires.
Outputs:
Pests and diseases for trees, forests systems and products identified.
Appropriate pest and disease management options developed.
Appropriate pest and disease management options packaged and disseminated.
Occurrence of forest fires and their their impact assessed.
Appropriate fire management techniques packaged and disseminated.
Impact of the technologies against pests, diseases and fires determined.

6. Socio-economic, Gender and Hman concerns:
Overall objective:
To mainstream socio economic, gender and human concerns including the issues of the prevalence of health hazards such as HIV/AIDs scourge and malaria into the technologies, practices, knowledge and information generated and disseminated.
Outputs:
Socio-economic needs and demands from forest and tree technology development and promotion identified.
Gender roles, responsibilties, and obligations including the interests of the youth, the elderly, disadvantaged groups and people with disabilities addressed.
The issues of prevailing health hazards (HIV/AIDs and malaria) and their effects intergrated.

7. Information Communication Management (ICM):
Overall objective:
To continually update library and information services; supporting networking and technical computer services for efficient and effective research execution.
Outputs:
Well stocked and continually updated library and information resource centre developed and coordinated.
Systems for assisting library users in locating and obtaining reading materials and proper arrangements to access information developed.
Networking and technical computer services to support the execution of research services provided
.
Technical guidance for information and communication technologyprovided..
