NaFORRI Projects:
 

1. Project Title : Diversification and promotion of utilization of indigenous tree species for improved livelihoods and economic development

Thematic area: Enhancing integrated management of natural resources

Impact Area being addressed : Greater integration of research into broader national development agenda

Project objectives:

i. Identify and prioritize indigenous trees for livelihood improvement.

ii. Conduct socioeconomic studies on the value of indigenous tree species in all agroecological zones

iii. Assess and develop sustainable harvesting and processing methods for products from indigenous trees


2. Project Title: Development of mechanisms for monitoring impacts of forestry technologies on people's livelihood

Thematic Area: Understanding people, their livelihood systems, demands and impact of innovations.

Impact Area being addressed : Greater integration of research into broader national development agenda

Project objectives:

i. To establish the status of forestry technology utilisation in different farming systems of Uganda ;

ii. To identify and assess dissemination approaches and uptake pathways for forestry technologies;


3. Project Title: Developing options for on-farm germplasm production, management and marketing for potential agroforestry tree species.

Impact area: Improved efficiency of production and utilization systems

Thematic area: Technological options that respond to demands and market opportunities

Impact Area being addressed : Greater integration of research into broader national development agenda

Project objectives:

i. To determine tree germplasm demand and supply.

ii. To improve the production and multiplication of improved tree germplasm

iii. To determine the best genetic and morphological quality of tree germplasm


4. Project Title: Domestication and propagation of priority plant species for improved health, livelihoods and incomes

Thematic Area: Theme 3 – Enhancing integrated management of natural resources

Project objectives:

i. To document the high value wild plants found in Uganda and their uses

ii. To document their natural distribution in the country

iii. To determine the conditions under which they grow in the wild


5. Project Title : Development and promotion of IPM technologies for plantation forestry pests: Leptocybe invasa and Cinara spp .

Thematic area: Technological options responding to demands and markets.

Project Objectives:

i. Release and monitor establishment of Quadrastichus Mendel agaisnt L.invasa

ii. Establish and monitor distribution of C.pinivora and L.invasa respectively

iii. Determine seasonal abundance, indigenous natural enemies and damage levels of C.pinivora


6. Project title: Enhancement of silviculture, stand development, profitability and productivity of plantation forestry in Uganda

Thematic Area: Enhancing Integrated Management of Natural Resources

P roject Objectives

i. To develop appropriate methods for production of planting materials for the various plantation species

ii. To characterize soils in major/selected plantations

iii. To develop appropriate nursery and plantation soil management practices


7. Project Title: Improving gum Arabic production from Acacia Senegal in Uganda

 Thematic Area: Technological options that respond to demands and market opportunities

Project Objectives:

i. To determine A.senegal gum Arabic tapping schedules, yields and trends

ii. To determine suitable biophysical conditions for optimum gum production

iii. To determine biological characteristics of A. senegal populations across site types


8. Project Title: Identification and evaluation of potential tree crops for bio-fuel production for industrial and domestic use

Thematic area: Developing technological options responding to demands and markets opportunities

Project Objectives:

The broad objective of the object is to evaluate the performance and quality of Jatropha curcas and Ricinus comminis for biofuel production and other bio-material applications as potential crops for improved livelihoods in Uganda . The specific objectives include the following:

i. To evaluate Jatropha and Castor provenances for agronomic performances.

ii. To profile Jatropha and Castor accessions for high oil quality and quantity targeting calorific potential, reduction of pollution and detoxification.


9. Project Title: Determination of relative carbon sequestration capacities of major plantation tree species with the view to participating in carbon trade arrangement.

Thematic area: Technology options that respond to demands and market opportunities.

Project Objectives:

i. To document carbon sequestration potential of the selected plantation tree species

ii. To develop local methodology for estimating baseline and monitoring carbon sequestration

iii. To develop local models of PDD for advising farmers to engage in carbon trade


10. Project Title: Development of strategies for ecotourism and tree management for aesthetics in built up environment

Thematic area: Technological options that respond to demands and market opportunities

Objectives

i. To assess plant and animal communities in Kifu FR for ecotourism

ii. To determine wildlife movement patterns in Kifu FR for ecotourism
